Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Vierk's Fine Jewelry in Lafayette, IN. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Cameras and a locked door are normal

Buzz-in doors, counters, and cameras protect the shop and the people in it. They are not aimed at you personally. Follow the house rules. If you are asked to wait to be let in, wait. That is a well-run store, not a cold shoulder.

  2. Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them

Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.

  3. Decide how you want to be paid before the offer

If you are selling, know whether you need cash today, a check, or time to think. Changing the method after they have made a number can change the number. A clear “I would like a check if we agree” at the start saves a second conversation.

  4. Be present when it is your turn

Take the call outside. Pull the earbuds. The dealer is about to look at your coins or pull something you asked for. A face-to-face minute is worth more than a half-distracted twenty. If you need to text a spouse about a number, say so and step aside.

  5. Do not clean the coins

Polish, dip, baking soda, and a toothbrush lower the value of most collectible coins. Leave dirt and toning alone. If you already cleaned something, say so. A dealer would rather hear the truth than discover it under a lamp.
