Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into The Coin Buyer in Montclair, CA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Do not ask them to come out to the car

Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.

  2. Cameras and a locked door are normal

Buzz-in doors, counters, and cameras protect the shop and the people in it. They are not aimed at you personally. Follow the house rules. If you are asked to wait to be let in, wait. That is a well-run store, not a cold shoulder.

  3. Give the counter some room

Lean on the glass, hover over an open box, or park six relatives at the rail and nobody can work. Leave space for the dealer to move trays, use a loop, and talk privately. Extra people can wait in the shop or the car unless they are needed to decide.

  4. One extra person is fine. A committee is not.

A spouse or a sibling who must agree is welcome. A table of relatives debating every coin is not a shop visit. Pick the decision-makers. Leave the rest home or in the car. The dealer can talk to two people. They cannot run a family meeting.

  5. Tell them if a coin is damaged, cleaned, or already graded

Hiding a problem wastes time and trust. “This one was cleaned” or “this already came back from PCGS” is useful. Dealers would rather adjust than feel tricked. Honesty on the small things makes the rest of the visit easier.
