Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Pnw Precious Metals and Coins in Sequim, WA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Kids are welcome when they stay with you

Most shops like young collectors. Keep children next to you, not behind the counter or in the cases. Hands off other people’s coins. A short visit with one or two questions beats a long visit where the dealer is watching the room instead of helping you.

  2. Follow the house rules without a debate

Bags on the floor, backpacks zipped, one person at the glass — shops set these for a reason. Argue about it and the visit is already off. If a rule is unclear, ask. If it is clear, do it.

  3. They do not have to buy what you brought

A shop can pass on tokens, damaged coins, or a category they do not handle. “We don’t buy that” is information. Ask who might. Do not argue them into a box they cannot use. A clean no today keeps the door open next time.

  4. Bring the holders, papers, and boxes they came in

Original packaging, certificates, and grading-company holders matter. Do not dump everything into a bag to “make it easier.” The dealer would rather see it the way it has been kept. Leave coins in PCGS, NGC, or ANACS holders.

  5. If you are getting another offer, say so up front

On a large lot it is fair to hear more than one shop. Tell them. A good dealer would rather know than spend an hour and find out you were only using them for a number. Do not treat a courtesy look as free inventory research for the next counter the same afternoon.
