Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Numismatic Conservation Services (NCS) in Lakewood Ranch, FL. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

   Insurance and probate need different paperwork

   If a lawyer, an executor, or an insurer sent you, say so. Bring what papers you have. The shop may not be the appraiser you need, and they will tell you. That honesty is useful. It is better than leaving with the wrong kind of number.

   Lunch and after-work can stack the counter

   Local shops get a rush when people are off the clock. If you have a box, those windows are the wrong time to expect a leisurely offer. Call and ask when they can sit with it. Most dealers would rather schedule you than rush you.

   Bullion and collector coins are different conversations

   Melt moves with the market. A key date does not. Say what you think you have, then let them look. Mixing “it’s old so it must be rare” with a junk-silver bag slows everyone down. Sort in your mind: weight versus date.

   Do not ask them to come out to the car

   Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.

   A written inventory helps on an estate

   Even a notebook list is better than a surprise pile. Heirs who write down what they think they have get a cleaner visit. If you are the executor, bring that fact and any papers. The shop can work faster when they are not inventing the catalog with you.
