Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Northridge Gold Mine and Diamond Buyers in Los Angeles, CA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

1. 01

   Cameras and a locked door are normal

   Buzz-in doors, counters, and cameras protect the shop and the people in it. They are not aimed at you personally. Follow the house rules. If you are asked to wait to be let in, wait. That is a well-run store, not a cold shoulder.

   Tell them if a coin is damaged, cleaned, or already graded

   Hiding a problem wastes time and trust. “This one was cleaned” or “this already came back from PCGS” is useful. Dealers would rather adjust than feel tricked. Honesty on the small things makes the rest of the visit easier.

   Keep quiet about another customer’s coins

   Do not grade, joke about, or value coins that are not yours. “That’s only a VF” from behind someone who is selling grandpa’s album is not helpful. Look at the cases. Let the dealer run their counter. You will get your turn.

4. 04

   Do not ask them to come out to the car

   Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.

   Bring identification on a larger visit

   A license in the car does not help at the counter. If you might sell, buy something expensive, or move cash, bring ID in with you. It speeds things up and avoids an awkward pause after you already agreed.
