Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into NJM Ventures, Inc. in Niagara Falls, NY. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. If you feel rushed, you can pause

You are allowed to say you need a minute. You are allowed to pack up and think. You are not required to decide while someone is waiting behind you — step aside and let them go. A good shop would rather you be sure than sorry.

  2. Show week can empty the shop — or pack it

If the dealer is on the road, the store may be closed or on shorter hours. If they just got back, they may be unpacking. Check this listing for upcoming shows and call if your visit is important. It is not personal. The bourse is part of the business.

  3. Shopping an offer is etiquette when you are honest

“I want to hear one more shop, then I will decide” is adult. “I already promised it to you” when you have not is not. If you come back, say what changed. Dealers respect a straight process. They do not respect being used as a foil.

  4. They do not have to buy what you brought

A shop can pass on tokens, damaged coins, or a category they do not handle. “We don’t buy that” is information. Ask who might. Do not argue them into a box they cannot use. A clean no today keeps the door open next time.

  5. Large cash deals may require identification

That is federal law on certain cash amounts, not the shop being nosy. Bring a government ID if you plan to move a lot of cash either direction. A dealer who asks for ID on a large deal is doing the job the right way.
