Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into John Gulde in Scottsdale, AZ. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. One extra person is fine. A committee is not.

A spouse or a sibling who must agree is welcome. A table of relatives debating every coin is not a shop visit. Pick the decision-makers. Leave the rest home or in the car. The dealer can talk to two people. They cannot run a family meeting.

  2. A buy offer is not an appraisal

An offer is what this shop will pay today. An appraisal is a written opinion, often for insurance or an estate, and it is a different service. If you need a document, say that first. Do not treat a verbal number as a formal appraisal.

  3. Decide how you want to be paid before the offer

If you are selling, know whether you need cash today, a check, or time to think. Changing the method after they have made a number can change the number. A clear “I would like a check if we agree” at the start saves a second conversation.

  4. Follow the house rules without a debate

Bags on the floor, backpacks zipped, one person at the glass — shops set these for a reason. Argue about it and the visit is already off. If a rule is unclear, ask. If it is clear, do it.

  5. Wait your turn at the counter

A coin shop is not a buffet line. The person already at the glass is in a private conversation. Stand back, keep your box closed, and wait to be invited forward. Jumping in with “real quick” questions while someone is selling a collection is the fastest way to start a visit on the wrong foot.
