Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Great Falls Gold and Silver in Great Falls, MT. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. What is in the case today may be gone tomorrow

Coin shops turn inventory. A picture from last month is not a hold. If you want a date or a grade, call or start a want list. Showing up and hoping the exact piece is still there is how people get disappointed.

  2. Know roughly what you brought

You do not need to be an expert. A simple list — silver dollars, a few proofs, a bag of wheat cents — helps. “I have no idea, you tell me” on a mixed box is fine once. It is harder when the box is huge and you cannot say what you want out of the visit.

  3. A hold is a promise. Mean it.

If they hold a coin for you, ask how long and how you pay. Come back or call. Do not park the same piece at two shops. Dealers remember the customer who used a hold as a free option. They also remember the one who did what they said.

  4. Do not walk in at closing with a suitcase

Five minutes to close is time to pick up a hold, not to dump an estate. Large lots take time to weigh, look up, and talk through. Call earlier in the day and ask when they can give you a proper look. A shop that is locking the door still has to balance the register and get home.

  5. When metals jump, the shop gets busier

A sharp day in gold or silver fills the parking lot. Offers take longer. Lines get real. If you can wait a quieter day, you will get a better conversation. If you cannot, bring patience and a simple list of what you have.
