Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Golden Pawn & Jewelry in Gardendale, AL. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

1. 01

   Do not assume every shop takes a credit card

   Many do. Some do not. Some take cards on retail and prefer another method when they are buying from you. None of that is a trick. Ask, “Do you take cards?” before you empty your wallet. If they say no, that is an answer, not a negotiation.

   Decide if you are selling all of it or part of it

   “I need this gone” and “I only want to sell the silver” lead to different offers. Decide before you sit down. Changing the goal halfway through wastes their time and yours. It is fine to keep a piece that is sentimental. Say which one.

   No magnets, acids, or scratch tests on the pad

   The shop has the tools if a test is needed. Do not perform experiments on the glass. You can damage the coin and the counter. If you think something is fake, say why and let them look.

4. 04

   A buy offer is not an appraisal

   An offer is what this shop will pay today. An appraisal is a written opinion, often for insurance or an estate, and it is a different service. If you need a document, say that first. Do not treat a verbal number as a formal appraisal.

   Do not make a deal with another customer at the counter

   If you overhear what someone is selling, that is not an invitation. Do not offer to buy their coins, do not quote a price over their shoulder, and do not ask the shop to “introduce you.” The counter is the shop’s workplace. Side deals in the aisle put the dealer in an ugly spot and make other customers uncomfortable.
