Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Gold & Diamond Trade (South Houston) in Pasadena, TX. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

   Stay with your coins

   Do not leave a box on the counter and wander the cases. Do not ask the dealer to watch your bag while you go to the car. Your lot stays in front of you until the deal is done or you pack up. That is how both sides stay comfortable.

   Wait your turn at the counter

   A coin shop is not a buffet line. The person already at the glass is in a private conversation. Stand back, keep your box closed, and wait to be invited forward. Jumping in with “real quick” questions while someone is selling a collection is the fastest way to start a visit on the wrong foot.

   Regulars get easier visits because they are known

   Introduce yourself. Come back. Pay as you said you would. The second visit is almost always smoother than the first. A local shop is a relationship, not a vending machine. That works in your favor when you have something unusual.

   A buy offer is not an appraisal

   An offer is what this shop will pay today. An appraisal is a written opinion, often for insurance or an estate, and it is a different service. If you need a document, say that first. Do not treat a verbal number as a formal appraisal.

   Decide how you want to be paid before the offer

   If you are selling, know whether you need cash today, a check, or time to think. Changing the method after they have made a number can change the number. A clear “I would like a check if we agree” at the start saves a second conversation.
