Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Central Florida Coin Exchange in Orlando, FL. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Saturday morning is often the busy window

That is when collections walk in and regulars stop by. Fine if you like energy. Less fine if you want a long, quiet look at an estate. Midweek late morning is often easier. If you need time, ask when they are slower.

  2. They may weigh, look up, or photograph

That is how a careful shop works. It is not stalling. Stay with your coins. If they need a minute in the back, that is their process. Ask if you are unsure what is happening. Curiosity is fine. Suspicion as a default is not.

  3. Ask before you touch anything in the case

The dealer will hand you a coin or put it on a pad. Do not reach into a tray or slide a slab toward yourself. Handle coins by the edges if they are raw. If you drop something, say so immediately.

  4. Kids are welcome when they stay with you

Most shops like young collectors. Keep children next to you, not behind the counter or in the cases. Hands off other people’s coins. A short visit with one or two questions beats a long visit where the dealer is watching the room instead of helping you.

  5. Do not ask them to come out to the car

Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.
