Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into American Coin Collection Shop in Bernardino, CA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Insurance and probate need different paperwork

If a lawyer, an executor, or an insurer sent you, say so. Bring what papers you have. The shop may not be the appraiser you need, and they will tell you. That honesty is useful. It is better than leaving with the wrong kind of number.

  2. Do not ask them to come out to the car

Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.

  3. This is a working shop, not a museum desk

They will talk coins. They will not give a free seminar on forty pieces while a line forms. Pick your best questions. Buy a book if you want to learn the series. A dealer who teaches a little is being generous with the clock.

  4. Ask before you touch anything in the case

The dealer will hand you a coin or put it on a pad. Do not reach into a tray or slide a slab toward yourself. Handle coins by the edges if they are raw. If you drop something, say so immediately.

  5. Say thank you even if you do not deal

Looking is part of the hobby. Buying or selling is not required. If they spent time with you, say thanks and mean it. A short good visit is how regulars are made. A review later, if you had a fair experience, helps the shop more than a vague promise to “come back sometime.”
