Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into A1 Scranton Gold and Silver Buyers in PA. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

1. 01

   Not every coin shop is a pawn shop

   Some do jewelry and scrap. Some do not. Ask if you have gold jewelry, a watch, or diamonds. Do not assume, and do not be put out if coins are what they do. The right shop for coins may send you next door for the rest.

   Say thank you even if you do not deal

   Looking is part of the hobby. Buying or selling is not required. If they spent time with you, say thanks and mean it. A short good visit is how regulars are made. A review later, if you had a fair experience, helps the shop more than a vague promise to “come back sometime.”

   Cash is still common. That is normal.

   Coin and bullion shops have worked in cash for a long time. It is not shady by itself. Count together at the counter. Do not count a stack in the parking lot with the door open. If you are uncomfortable carrying cash, say so and ask what else they can do.

   Bring identification on a larger visit

   A license in the car does not help at the counter. If you might sell, buy something expensive, or move cash, bring ID in with you. It speeds things up and avoids an awkward pause after you already agreed.

   Show week can empty the shop — or pack it

   If the dealer is on the road, the store may be closed or on shorter hours. If they just got back, they may be unpacking. Check this listing for upcoming shows and call if your visit is important. It is not personal. The bourse is part of the business.
